October 25, 2016 – Faith & Society: Internment Camps and Dehumanization
Season 9, Episode 43
How about it, do you think we should lock up entire segments of society because of their ethnic or religious background? On this episode of Friends Talking Faith with The Three Wise Guys we discuss Faith and Dehumanizing “The Other.” It’s not a new idea, we put Japanese-Americans in internment camps during World War II, and the plan was put in place for the internment of Muslim Americans during the Reagan administration, though it was never carried out. Today the political rhetoric has suggested this action may be taken again in the United States, this time against Americans who are Muslim. Our guest today will help us to sort out both the history and the psychological dynamics behind these ideas. We’ll ask him if there is a similarity to the rhetoric in America today and what was happening in Germany in the 1930’s. Our conversation with holocaust educator, Mr. Mitch Bloomer (pictured here), internment camps, fear of the other, and the road to dehumanization – all that and more is coming up on this installment of Friends Talking Faith.
