October 14, 2014 – Faith & Politics: Civil Rights and the March on Washington
Season 6, Episode 16
On this episode of Friends Talking Faith with The Three Wise Guys we discuss faith and civil rights leaders and activists.
Dr. Aldon Morris, author of the landmark book, Origins of the Civil Rights Movement, correctly identifies the African-American church in the South as the center and heart beat of America’s civil rights movement: its leaders and activists were well-organized, thoughtful, and principled in their approach. Well known icons included the Rev. Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Thurgood Marshall.
Along with such well-known names, there were tens of thousands of others who gave leadership and energy to a movement which literally changed a nation. Today we’ll talk with one of our local luminaries: he’s a clergyman, an educator, and a civil rights leader and activist – we’ll get his perspective on the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and where we are today in this continuing struggle.
