They have served — and many have died for — our country. Since the American Revolution, nearly 45 million Americans have served in the military. More than 1.3 million of our soldiers have lost their lives while serving this country. Today, there are more than 22 million veterans in the US, and the number of disabled veterans — more than 3 1/2 million — has been steadily rising since 2001. Our faith compels us to look closely at this growing issue in America, to ask some of the hard questions, and to be a part of this extremely important national conversation.
