August 29, 2017 – Faith & Society: Turkey, Destroying Freedom of the Press
with Abdülhamit Bilici
Season 10, Episode 35
It is called the 4th estate, and it is absolutely essential to a free, fair, and intelligent democracy! This week on Friends Talking Faith with The Three Wise Guys we’ll discuss faith, a free press, and the erosion of democracy in Turkey. In this, the second in a two-part series, we explore the importance of a free press for a free democracy. Thomas Carlyle, in his book, On Heroes and Hero Worship, quotes Edmund Burke as saying:
“… there were Three Estates in Parliament; but, in the Reporters’ Gallery yonder, there sat a Fourth Estate more important by far than they all.”
In ancient times the reference to Three Estates of power referred to the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners. Later it would refer to the separation of powers in government – legislative, executive, and judiciary. Is the 4th estate – the press – in trouble in the US in the same way that it is in Turkey as democracy there is repressed and dismantled? Our guest today — Turkish exiled journalist Mr. Abdulhamit Bilici – will talk to us about democracy in Turkey and the United States – That conversation is on this episode of Friends Talking Faith.
