August 22, 2017 – Faith & Society: Turkey, A Nation in Distress
Season 10, Episode 34
A journalist living in exile in the United States and an NBA basketball player… what do they have in common? This week on Friends Talking Faith with The Three Wise Guys we’ll discuss faith, journalism under attack, and the countries of Turkey and the United States – we’ll also have a visit by a Turkish national who is an NBA player. A little over a year ago there was a failed coup attempt in Turkey. The Turkish president, Recep Erdoğan, immediately blamed a Turkish Imam living in exile in the United States – Imam Fethullah Gülen maintains he had nothing to do with it. Many have suggested that the coup was staged by Erdoğan himself to secure his continuing desire for greater power and control in Turkey. In the spring of this year Erdoğan won an election – the veracity of which is questioned by many – in which he secured broad and sweeping powers, rolling back much of Turkey’s democracy. We’ll talk to an exiled journalist, and we’ll also have a conversation with a Turkish pro basketball NBA player. Our first in a two-part series on Turkey – That conversation on this episode of Friends Talking Faith.
